Carpenter Brut
The Misfits / The Rebels

For the release of the Leather Temple album, I had the distinct honor of directing the second video in a trilogy celebrating the grand return of Carpenter Brut.

Collaborating directly with the artist, we crafted a narrative that expands the universe of this new album. Diving full throttle into a Sci-Fi Cyberpunk aesthetic, this video was conceived as a tribute to the gritty, vintage Japanese anime of the 80s and 90s.

To achieve this classic style on a tight budget, I utilized a hybrid workflow blending 2D, 3D, and AI. This allowed me to generate the necessary assets, which were then unified during a heavy compositing phase. Crucially, we re-lit many elements in post-production to dramatically stylize the shading and lighting.

In anime production, economic constraints often dictate artistic decisions. We leaned into the 'cheats' and shortcuts of old-school productions, turning those limitations into a stylistic advantage. Techniques like fixed backgrounds, flash frames, and animation loops allowed us to faithfully emulate the vintage reference material.
